Nassau County youth recently participated in 4-H University.
“Four-H University is the premier 4-H event that brings youth from all backgrounds together at the University of Florida campus to interact with UF professors and build relationships with important adults who can support them when they go to get a job later in life,” said Sarah Hensley, a state specialized agent with the University of Florida’s 4-H Youth Development program.
This year 4-H University hit a record attendance with about 340 teens from across the state taking up residence in UF dormitories for the week. Nassau County had four youth participate for the entire week and two participate for the state-level demonstration competition.
Isabella Frazier took home a red award for her demonstration on show chicken grooming and two awards for her photography – a first place in the scenic category and second in still life. Her first place photo will be featured on the state 4-H website.
Zachary Hutchinson also took home a red award for his illustrated talk about various chicken breeds.
“We are so proud of these youth as this was their first-ever state competition,” said Kelsey Irvine, 4-H Extension Agent I for Nassau County.
The university schedule is full, with activities starting at 7 a.m. and ending with lights-out at 11:30 p.m. State competitions are carried out from public speeches to even a talent show. The “Gator Pit” is a competitive entrepreneurial opportunity for youth to present their business ideas to receive funding from 4-H. Then there are state elections where voting delegates from each county determine the next state 4-H Council. A dance is also held.
Nassau County expects increased participation next year.
