Wind gusts from afternoon thunderstorms downed trees along Otis Road, affecting Bryceville residents Aug. 24.

Saturated ground from recent rains and wind gusts possibly as high as 60 mph contributed to the incident that affected Nassau and Duval counties. A tree also fell on a property at Church Avenue in Bryceville, National Weather Service Meteorologist Ben Nelson said Monday. Another property owner reported more than 20 fallen trees.

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 4:50 p.m. Weather officials began receiving several reports of toppled trees between 5 and 6. in Nassau and Duval counties. Power lines were also down near Cravey and Thomas Creek roads, Nelson said.

During the slow moving storm, approximately 1 to 1.75 inches of rain fell in some areas of western Nassau. Rains continued throughout the weekend as well.

“The area is mostly being affected by a tropical storm in Georgia that could be named Irma,” Nelson said.

By Monday morning, the tropical storm had moved toward the Carolinas, as weather officials issued tropical storm watches for those areas, according to online news reports.

Locally, rain will continue throughout the week, according to the NWS website.
