Several Nassau County agencies and civilians work together to rescue a 24-year-old horse that fell into a septic tank Jan. 16. First responders immediately noticed that the horse was exhausted and knew they had to move quickly to save him and prevent further stress. The first thing they did was remove the remaining portions of the broken septic tank lid so the horse could stand up. The water was then pumped out so that responders could access the horse to place a strap under his belly. The horse was then lifted out of the hole by county equipment. Nassau County Fire Rescue, Nassau County Animal Services, Nassau County Emergency Management, Nassau County 4-H, Nassau County Road and Bridge and the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office participated in the rescue effort along with local resident Klynt Farmer of K.A. Farmer’s Septic Tank Service.
