St. George Elementary School students will enter newly renovated classrooms when school starts Aug. 6.

Ten classrooms and the school’s main building will receive new paint, electrical upgrades, new carpeting and updates to the ceilings. Renovations in the main building include updates to the front office, all restrooms and a new air conditioning system, according to Charlton County Schools Superintendent Dr. John Lairsey.

“It’s going to be a quick project,” he said June 4. “It will be a great improvement for St. George.”

The $1 million project is possible with $450,000 in Georgia state funds and the school district picking up the remainder. Bent Pine Construction Co., Inc. leads the renovation.

Principal Dr. Drew Sauls looks forward to the changes.

“We’re going to appreciate it,” he said. “It’s going to be nice. Everything’s going to be new and it’s going to be like being in a new building.”

Work began in the classrooms June 4. Renovation to the main building will begin when the classrooms are completed.

The most recent renovation was in 1998 when the former gym was modified to serve as the school’s main building and media center. A new gym was constructed on campus that same year, according to Tommy Harris, media specialist.

Fire destroyed the original school building in 1937. SGES reopened in 1938, according to the site charltoncountyarchives.org.
