  • Several local churches are hosting giveaways this week, with free food, clothing and school supplies.

Community groups converge on western Nassau to lend helping hands. The following is a list of free events open to all citizens.

• Convoy of Hope visits First Baptist Church of Callahan Thursday. A tractor-trailer packed with bottled water, non-perishable food and cleaning supplies will be distributed at the Family Life Center beginning as early as 10 a.m.

• River Road Baptist Church hosts its annual two-day clothing giveaway Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, children’s toys and household items will be available.

The charitable event is in its ninth year. At least 1,100 people dropped by the giveaway in 2017, said event coordinator Roxann Blackstock.

“We can help families that have a need and take the burden off them,” she said. “A lot of people come and shop for school clothes. It’s a way to show that we care.”

River Road Baptist Church is located at 21067 C.R. 121, Hilliard.

Farm Share will arrive at 9 a.m. Saturday to distribute free prepacks of canned goods, fresh vegetables, fruit and other food until supplies run out.

“Our goal at Farm Share is for no one to go to bed hungry,” Facility Manager Gerald Sweatt wrote via email. “To have the opportunity to help so many families in need is a true blessing. Everyone will go through a bump in the road in life at some time and we at Farm Share are proud to know they will not go hungry. Farm Share, as a company, distributed over 52 million pounds of food in the state of Florida last year. We are on pace to distribute more in 2018.”

Farm Share returns to western Nassau Sept. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Northeast Florida Fairgrounds in Callahan. School supplies will be distributed.

• Second Baptist Church in Callahan hosts a school supplies giveaway Saturday at Callahan’s Ewing Park from 9-11 a.m. Crossroads Family Worship Center co-hosts the event. Families will receive school supplies. Hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages will also be available.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to bring the community together and be involved in giving back,” said Second Baptist Church Pastor Malachi Clowers.
