  • This gun was placed into evidence after a traffic stop netted the arrest of a man wanted for attempted murder.

A driver’s failure to stop at a stop sign led to his passenger’s arrest.

On Aug. 25 at approximately 9 p.m., a deputy with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office allegedly observed a Chevrolet Equinox traveling westbound on Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue in Callahan. The vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at Page Street and displayed an expired Florida license plate.

Upon making contact with the driver, the deputy allegedly smelled the odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The right front passenger, James Aurther Hill, admitted to smoking marijuana.

A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded .45 caliber handgun inside a backpack on the SUV’s floorboard. Additional ammo was inside. Two
small baggies containing marijuana were also located in the backpack.

Hill also had a warrant for his arrest out of Duval County for attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

James Aurther Hill, 36, from Jacksonville, was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of marijuana less than 20 grams, as well as the outstanding warrant for attempted murder.
