  • Hilliard Mayor Cris McConnell presents Hilliard Public Works employee John Maze with a certificate Thursday, acknowledging his decade of service to the town. Maze said he looks forward to another 20 years of employment with the municipality.

Hilliard town officials honored John Maze for his service Sept. 20.

The public works employee received a framed certificate from Mayor Cris McConnell for 10 years of dedicated service. He was hired Aug. 26, 2008.

“I’ve had a real good time,” Maze said. “I get to play in the holes, play in the mud and get paid for it. I look forward to the next 20 years.”

A reception with food and cake was held before the council meeting. His mother Eleanor Maze and aunt Lorna Goetz were in attendance.

“I just want to thank you for your hard work and your willingness to jump in the hole first,” McConnell said.

Council President John Beasley expressed his appreciation for Maze, saying, “John, I just want to thank you for 10 years of service as well. I know that, uh, there’s been some hard times but, you know, I know you’re always the first one to jump into a hole. I appreciate your service to the town.”

“I think everyone feels pretty much the same way,” the mayor said. “You’ve been dependable and willing to get your certifications and work your department. I appreciate that. I appreciate your service in the last three or four months. It’s been a little difficult for me and probably all of our employees.”

The council thanked Maze for his dedication.

Town Clerk Lisa Purvis expressed her appreciation, saying, “Thank you, John, for being such a happy, good-spirited employee for the last 10 years. I hope you’ll be here another 20.”
