Fire consumed an abandoned mobile home in Callahan Oct. 11.
When Nassau County Fire Rescue emergency responders arrived at 45306 Bismark Rd. just after 2:50 a.m., the structure was already about 75 percent involved, NCFR Chief Brady Rigdon said, adding, “It was pretty much destroyed.”
The State Fire Marshal’s Office has the incident under investigation.
NCFR stations 30, 50, 60 and 70 were on scene. Callahan Volunteer Fire Station 5 was on hand along with Tankers 40 and 70, according to Rigdon.
After battling the blaze, firefighters’ gear was sprayed to wash off toxins and any possible carcinogenic materials, according to Rigdon.
The NCFR has utilized decontamination kits since 2016. The NCFR recently received more kits through a $1 million grant from the Florida’s firefighter cancer mitigation grant program.
