  • Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper and Micah’s Place Executive Director Heather Jones place a magnet on a Nassau County Sheriff’s Office patrol car, promoting awareness about domestic violence.

October is Domestic Vio-lence Awareness Month in Nassau County and across the nation.

National Domestic Vio-lence Awareness Month is an
annual designation observed in October that serves to educate communities, individuals, couples and families about Family Advocacy Program services and other community resources that can help prevent domestic violence and raise awareness of community responsibility and resources for addressing domestic abuse.

Micah’s Place is the only certified domestic violence center serving Nassau County.  The organization’s mission is to provide prevention and intervention services to victims of domestic violence and to provide education within the community to effect change in behavior and attitudes relating to domestic violence.

“Domestic violence continues to be an issue in our community, in all kinds of families and relationships,” Sheriff Bill Leeper said in a news release.

“During 2017, our agency responded to 371 incidences of domestic violence involving rape, fondling, aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, simple assault, and threats/intimidation.”

In the case of an emergency, dial 911, but Micah’s Place is available to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week if you need a place to go, if you need referrals to other agencies or if you just need to talk.

Call Micah’s Place on the 24-hour crisis hotline at 904-225-9979. To donate items or host a fundraiser to benefit the non-profit, call 904-491-6364 or visit www.micahsplace.org.
