Voters elect Burns, re-elect Leeper

Hilliard Town Council candidate Jared Wollitz edged out incumbent Patricia Webb by 85 votes in his first bid for the seat. 

He earned a total of 517 votes compared to Webb’s 432. 

Incumbents Kenny Sims and Lee Pickett will retain their seats, earning 715 and 622 votes respectively. 

Jack Bailey captured 408 votes, but it was not enough to win his bid to return to the council, according to unofficial results from www.votenassau.com. 

Callahan Town Council candidates Marty Fontes, Ken Bass and David Mellecker were unopposed and will remain in office for another four years.

In the Nassau County sheriff’s race, Republican incumbent Bill Leeper handily defeated NPA candidate Carol Batchelor with 87.67 percent of the vote. Batchelor managed just 5,497 votes. Leeper enters his second term as sheriff. 

Republican Kathy Knight Burns won in the final battle for school superintendent, beating out Libertarian candidate Cheryl Reynolds James with 87.56 percent of the vote. James received 12.44 percent or 5,461 votes.  

Republican tax collector John Drew received 42,282 votes. Write-in votes in the race totaled less than 1 percent at 344.  

Among the 61,292 registered voters in Nassau County, 47,190 ballots were cast, representing a voter turnout of 76.99 percent. By 11 p.m. Tuesday, all precincts were reported with election day and early voting ballots counted. Mail in votes were still only partially counted as of Wednesday morning. 

Although 47,190 ballots were cast, none of the races had 100 percent participation locally. The highest participation was in the presidential election, with 46,920 ballots cast. 

In the superintendent race, 43,902 votes were cast while the sheriff race had the most local participation with 44,570 and tax collector has 42,626 ballots cast.

In the Ocean, Highway and Port Authority District 1 race, Republican  Robert “Bob” Sturgess defeated Democrat Coleman Carnegie Langshaw with 76.92 percent of the vote. Langshaw earned 9,885 votes. 

Nassau Soil and Water Conservation District Group 4 incumbent Thomas R. Ford won with 70.26 percent of the vote, totaling 24,911. Opponent Halston S. Nelson captured 29.74 percent with 10,542 votes.

In the straw ballot for mayor of Fernandina Beach, Robin C. Lentz took the lead with 49.43 percent. She garnered 3,135 votes over Len Kreger with 1,764 or 27.81 percent. Roy G. Smith had 1,443 votes or 22.75 percent.  

Republican Marco Rubio failed in his bid to be the Republicans’ presidential candidate, but returns for another term as U.S. senator. He captured 52 percent of the vote statewide. Democrat Patrick Murphy received 44 percent. 

Former Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford will represent District 4 as a U.S. congressman. He replaces the retiring Ander Crenshaw. A Republican, Rutherford defeated Democrat David E. Bruderly and NPA candidate Gary L. Koniz with 70 percent of the district’s vote. 

Donald Trump is president-elect, defeating Hillary Rodham Clinton. The election was called shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday.
