A bridge repair project on Callahan’s Stratton Road will cause road closures for about three weeks.
Construction and road closures will begin Dec. 5 so that workers may access the bridge, located about half a mile from A1A. Work hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until the project is complete. Work will not occur on major holidays.
The road will be closed for at least 21 days. The closure is just past the shopping center to east and westbound traffic, causing motorists to be re-routed at Hodges Road to Lem Turner Road, according to information from Hayward Construction Group, LLC. Motorists coming from A1A will have to take U.S. 1 to Lem Turner to Hodges to access Stratton.
The $69,750 project includes replacing rotted timber in existing retaining walls with new pressure-treated timber.
This is the first time in seven years that the bridge will be shut down for repairs.
“We apologize for the inconvenience, but the bridge has some issues that need dealt with,” said Nassau County Public Works Director Scott Herring.
Because Stratton Road has also experienced some sinking and has foundation issues along the northern approach from the bridge, wing walls on both sides of the structuture will be replaced with new pressure-treated wood.
Also, support pilings for the wing walls will also be replaced with new pressure-treated wood in accordance with current Florida Department of Transportation specifications.
Once construction is complete, Stratton Road, which will not be widened, will receive an overlay and new striping, according to information from the Nassau County Road and Bridge Department.
