An Illinois man led Nassau County Sheriff’s deputies on a nearly 8-mile car chase before he was apprehended on foot July 31.

John Paul Guillermo Davies, 27, from Delong, Ill. was speeding in a white 2017 Kia Optima along U.S. 1 North around 11:30 a.m. when a NCSO deputy clocked him and attempted to stop the vehicle after the deputy determined that Davies was exceeding the speed limit, according to Sheriff Bill Leeper.

“As the deputy approached the suspect’s vehicle, the driver slammed on the brakes, which caused the deputy to strike the vehicle in the rear with its front at U.S. 1 and Green Avenue,” Leeper wrote via email Thursday afternoon. “The suspect then fled and left the scene, continuing northbound, turning onto Brandies Avenue heading west. The deputy attempting to stop the vehicle also observed the driver hit the right front passenger in the head.”

Davies’ 15-year-old brother was his passenger.

The Kia continued traveling down River Road toward County Road 121 with law enforcement in pursuit before Davies exited the car, ran into a cornfield and was apprehended a short time later.

Davies fled “because he had marijuana, vape cartridges containing THC and a vape pen,” Leeper noted.

Davies faces charges of aggravated fleeing/eluding after a crash,
possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest without violence, possession of drug residue and battery. He was booked into the Nassau County Jail. He was held on $63,010 bond.
