Operation Cold Summer

“Operation Cold Summer” netted 53 arrests.

The operation was the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and Ferandina Beach Police Department’s combined effort to reduce illegal drug activity in the county. They were assisted by the Fourth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office and North Florida High Intesity Drug Trafficking Area Organization in conducting numerous undercover drug operations.

“The people who were involved in this operation sell poison to our citizens and are all repeat offenders,” said Sheriff Bill Leeper. “If we successfully remove the drug dealers and repeat offenders from our community, crime ultimately goes down.” 

These 53 individuals have a collective total of 599 previous arrests between them. Items seized included 2,078 grams (over 4 pounds) of ice methamphetamine, 11 grams of heroin mixed with fentanyl, 14 grams of crack cocaine, 1,694 grams (over 3.75 pounds) of marijuana, six guns, one vehicle, and $8,688. 

“Law enforcement and fire rescue has responded to numerous overdose medical calls so far in 2019, with seven of those being fatal. A total of 16 people died of drug overdoses last year,” said Leeper. “People who buy these illegal drugs are playing Russian roulette with their lives.” 

FBPD Chief Jim Hurley added, “My hope is that this joint operation sends a very clear message to those involved in the sale of harmful, illegal substances.”

The NCSO and FBPD continually seek the community’s help in reducing illegal drug activity.

“If you are selling illegal drugs in Nassau County, you can stop now, leave the county or keep looking over your shoulder, because we are coming after you,” Leeper said.
