Callahan Middle School students decorate boxes that will provide Thanksgiving food items for eight families. Several schools across the district host outreach projects and events during the holiday season.

Students reach out to help their peers and the community during the holidays.

Callahan Elementary School hosts its Thanksgiving food drive through Friday. Students are asked to bring non-perishable food on their physical education and music day. A one-mile Turkey Trot run/walk featuring Mr. and Mrs. Turkey is held during P.E. classes.

“This event allows our students to learn the importance of giving back and helping those in need,” event organizer Alma Williamson wrote in a press release.

All donations will be sent to The Anchor Church of God’s food ministry. CES also hosts a Grinch 5K run and family walk in the school bus lot Dec. 14. Entry is $15 for ages 13 to adult. Children 12 and under pay $5. The run/walk begins at 8:45 a.m. Registration starts at 7:30. Awards will be given to first, second and third place winners.

The run benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the school’s physical education program. Music, face painting, healthy snacks and information tables will be onsite.

Bryceville Elementary School is collecting canned food and non-perishable items for Thanksgiving baskets. Donations are accepted through Monday.

Lighthouse Baptist, Brandy Branch Baptist and First Baptist Church of Bryceville assist the food drive. Extra food items will comprise Christmas baskets that will be distributed before the holiday break in December.

Christmas carols are on tap during an Accelerated Reader night and “A Country Christmas” sing-along Dec. 5. The evening includes singing carols, sipping hot chocolate and taking pictures with Santa Claus. Librarian John Carr hosts the event.

At Hilliard Elementary, Junior Beta Club members collected canned food items, stuffing, rice, instant mashed potatoes, cake mixes and other non-perishables for two to three food baskets. Hams will also be added before the baskets are distributed Tuesday.

“These baskets are for families within the school,” said Junior Beta Club Sponsor Karen Starling.

Callahan Middle School’s Junior Beta Club collected non-perishable food for eight families. Students in Nicole Mangum’s physical education classes decorated the food boxes with a “Happy Thanksgiving” message.

“It was fun,” Mangum said.

West Nassau High Sch-ool hosts various events and projects to assist families.

The Air Force JROTC Flight 955 gives grocery store gift cards to two families each Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Beta Club collects non-perishables for several food baskets. The Warrior basketball team hosts the “Boys Basketball Bash” Friday. The exhibition game will be held in the gym during fourth period. Attendees may donate two canned food items in lieu of paying $2 to watch the game, according to WNHS guidance counselor Heather Eddy.

Also, WNHS hosts “A Callahan Christmas” with family activities offered Dec. 14. Santa Claus will visit and vendor booths will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. School representatives from Sonshine Christian Academy, Hilliard Middle-Senior High and Callahan Intermediate schools did not respond with plans by press time.
