From monuments and museums, to history in the making, the 2020 National Washington Youth Tour is a leadership experience that will immerse young people from across the country in a historical and cultural trip of a lifetime promoting awareness and understanding of our nation’s past, present and future.
Okefenoke Rural Electric Membership Corporation sponsors four students to participate in the Washington Youth Tour and invites all high school juniors living in the eight counties it serves – including Nassau – to apply to become a delegate.
“History came alive,” reflects Blake McIlwain of Jesup, Ga. about his 2019 Youth Tour experience. “It was a fantastic trip where I made friends and memories for a lifetime.”
Mady Kate Bullard from Nahunta, Ga. agrees the tour is a once in a lifetime experience that enabled her “to experience something bigger than myself. I was deeply moved by the Holocaust Museum and, as a librarian’s daughter, felt right at home among all those books at the Library of Congress.”
Youth tour information and the application are available online at oremc.com/our-community, at each of OREMC’s offices in Nahunta, Kingsland and Hilliard, or from high school guidance counselors. Completed applications must be received by Feb. 27.
“The trip taught me a lot about myself,” notes Sydney Starling from Jacksonville. “To be surrounded by like-minded students from across the county made a big impression on me. We all had similar passions and interests and pushed each other to pursue our goals.”
Revealing new perspectives and gaining self-awareness was also something Samantha Baxter of Folkston, Ga. took away from her experience.
“There is such a sense of history and awe standing at the end of the reflecting pool and looking back toward the Capitol. I have three brothers in the military and the trip gave me a greater appreciation for what they do.”
