Callahan Station 5 firefighters passed the boot, collecting $10,300 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Their efforts during September’s “Fill the Boot Campaign” yielded a certificate of appreciation from the organization. Callahan Mayor Bobby Rau and Council President Ken Bass recognized Chief Joey Osteen and Asst. Chief Mike Guinn Jan. 3 for the department’s willingness to donate its time.

In another matter, Karen Hardge requested a $500 donation in support of “Celebrating the American Dream” Saturday at Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.

The Concerned Citizens of Nassau County, Patricia V. Williams Chapter, hosts a breakfast beginning at 9:30 a.m. Cost is $7 for children 12 and younger and senior citizens. A regular ticket costs $10. The event is in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the national observance. In a separate event, the Concerned Citizens of Nassau County will host a church service Monday at 10 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 45019 Johnson Rd., Callahan. Dr. Marion Wise is the speaker.

A parade lineup begins at 11:30 a.m. and will proceed to Callahan’s Ewing Park at noon.

In another observance, the Concerned Citizens of Hilliard host a peace walk in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The walk begins at the former Hilliard Town Hall and ends at Hisbon Baptist Church, with services following. The church is located at 37214 W. Sixth St.

Following Hardge’s request, the Callahan Town Council voted unanimously to approve a $250 donation toward the event. Rau authorized the donation so that funds could be available prior to the breakfast.

Additionally, Callahan’s Boy Scout Troop 351 will receive a $250 donation via Resolution 2017-R01.

Also unanimously approved on second reading was Ordinance 2016-O06, approving the town’s water and sewer tap fees and Ordinance 2016-O07, approving park impact fees.
