Two mobile homes caught fire in Callahan, displacing two families.
A doublewide mobile home at 54233 Plantation Rd. was already engulfed in flames along the structure’s rear when emergency responders arrived just after 12:15 a.m. Monday, according to a Nassau County Fire Rescue incident report. The home’s occupants were evacuated initially while two pet cages holding multiple live guinea pigs and an aquarium containing a live lizard were still inside. Firefighters removed the pets from the premises. The animals were not harmed.
Stephanie Coltrane, 38, suffered minor smoke inhalation and was transported to UF Health Jacksonville North.
NCFR Asst. Chief Scott Hemmingway wrote via email Monday afternoon that he believed a smoke detector was on the premises, but it “may not have been operational.”
Emergency responders from NCFR stations 40, 50, 60 and 90 were on scene.
The blaze started at an electrical breaker box, according to the state fire marshal on scene.
The doublewide mobile home sustained an estimated $18,000 in total damages.
A GoFundMe account was setup to assist the Coltrane family, including husband John and son Collin, with any donations to help them rebuild their lives. The family could also use clothes donations.
