St. James Baptist Church Deacon George I. Mason and his wife, Associate Pastor Sydell Mason, join Nassau Board of County Commiss-ioners Chairman Pat Edwards as he reads a resolution Monday in honor of the congrega-tion’s 136th anniversary. Pastor Johnnie Greene was unable to attend. The church was founded in the Evergreen community in May 1882 at the former site of the county’s courthouse. It relocated there in 1835 and remained open for 28 years, until it was moved closer inland, according to the resolution. A fish fry and meet and greet will be held on church grounds July 6 at 6 p.m. A cookout and children’s activities will be held July 7, noon to 5 p.m. The anniversary celebration culminates with a homecoming service at 11 a.m. July 8. Everyone is invited to all of the festivities.
