An early morning house fire awakened a Callahan family Dec. 20 as smoke filled a bathroom.
The home’s occupants and their pets escaped the fire without injury.
The fire at 45467 Hill Road erupted at 4:15 a.m. in the home of Cecil D. Williams, Jr., according to a Nassau County Fire Rescue incident report.
He and other family members were across the street at a relative’s home when NCFR Station 50 personnel arrived to see fire and smoke showing from two windows, according to the incident report.
The blaze was most likely caused by a space heater that was located in the bathroom. The floor where the activated space heater sat looked like a fire pit, according to the incident report.
Davis told firefighters that he was “overcome by the smoke and had to get out,” the incident report noted.
A smoke detector was not inside the home, which sustained approximately $60,000 in property damage. Damage to contents was estimated at $25,000.
Battalions 1 and 2 and NCFR stations 30, 40, 50, 60 and 90 were on scene.
Firefighters also performed salvage and overhaul at the premises and were on scene for nearly two hours.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in to investigate. The American Red Cross was also called in to offer assistance to the family.
